The Warrior Dash

Last year while searching for new and challenging races I stumbled upon the Warrior Dash. I had no idea what the race entailed so I went to their website to look for more info. I was greeted with this:

“Craziest Frickin’ Day Of Your Life!”

and if that wasn’t enough, I found this when I clicked on Info:

“Warrior Dash Is A Mud-Crawling, Fire-Leaping, Extreme Run From Hell. This Fierce Running Series Is Held On The Most Challenging And Rugged Terrain Across The Globe. Warriors Conquer Extreme Obstacles, Push Their Limits And Celebrate With Kick-Ass Music, Beer And Warrior Helmets.”

So by now they obviously had my attention, running, beer and warrior helmets. I mean how could you pass this up.

Warrior Helmet and shirt are included in registration fees

 Last year most of the Warrior Dash races were far from home and I probably would have had to fly just to get to one. This year there are TONS of races. There is even one in Ohio…Logan Ohio which is 4 hours from Cleveland and hotels are already filled up for race weekend. I did my research and opted to run the Michigan race instead. It’s only 3.5 hours away and I found lots of hotels nearby, although I will probably make a long day trip out of it. Yay!

Each race is slightly different in distance and which obstacles they have. The Michigan race is 3.30 hellish miles and consists of the following obstacles:

  • Junkyard Jump
  • Warrior Wall
  • Deadweight Drifter
  • Chaotic Crossover
  • Arachnophobia
  • Slithering Swamp
  • Walk The Plank
  • Cargo Climb
  • Warrior Roast
  • Muddy Mayhem

I bet you are thinking “how in the world do I train for this?” I was thinking the same thing. According to the Warrior Dash FAQ’s this is how you train.

  1. Day one: run as far as you can. Go home.
  2. Day two: do the same thing.
  3. Find the dirtiest pond in your neighborhood and snorkel in it – in your slippers, without goggles.
  4. Practice your climbing and crawling skills at your local jungle gym. Ignore the small children and parental glares.
  5. Do not shower or shave for weeks in order to obtain a true Warrior look.

Needles to say I am super pumped for this race!

Has anyone else done the Warrior Dash or planning to do one this year? I am open to any tips you may have.

  1. I’m doing the Logan, OH one! I didn’t even think about check out the MI one, as that is closer! Oh well, I’m excited! As far as training I’m not doing anything special. Just cardio and pushups and then winging it when I get there!

    I am doing the WD as well down in Logan, I cant wait, I really think its going to be the funnest race of the year for me

  3. I’m in the Michigan event. I did speak to someone who ran the Warrior Dash last year (not here in Michigan, this is the first year). Her advice: it’s all legs and lungs. So, I’m running on the treadmill, and with the weather turning nicer, will start running around the horse pasture.
