Sandy Ridge Half Marathon

I’d be lying if I signed up for this race just for fun. I most definitely signed up for this race to get revenge! I puked…and rallied at the River Run Half Marathon a week previously and I just had to get one more decent half marathon in my system before all my marathons came up.

When I registered for this race you had the option for a shirt or no shirt. Considering I have drawers full of t shirts and I don’t ever wear I opted for no shirt for a slightly discounted rate. However, race morning they had so many extras that they gave me one anyways!

I know that the company that puts on these races usually has a smaller shower than other races so I knew it wouldn’t be too crowded. A whopping 12 females in the half marathon (not including those who ran the 10K).

Race started a little over 5 mins behind, usually I don’t get too upset about those things but it was pretty cold and I didn’t know anyone else there so I wanted to get the show on the road. Race started and I told myself I would not go out fast and I would run my own race. Also, my goal was No Puke, All Rally. So of course I still went out a little fast but I slowed it down after the first mile. There was 1 girl in front of me at that point so I was just waiting for another girl to pass me. And I waited and waited and tried really hard not to look back.

I passed fellow blogger Chelsea’s house and was super jealous of everyone sitting outside cheering on every runner that went past. Not only that but there were signs all over the place and they even decorated the street with her name……they also added my name!

The miles were flying by and I was feeling surprisingly good at mile 8. The entire course is extremely flat. I am pretty sure the only hill was around mile 9 and it was nothing. Although this is where I started to wear down a little bit and decided to walk through the water stop so that I could take my Gu (a little late) and get a good amount of water. Before I knew it I was at mile 11 and my pace was def slowing down but the only person who had passed me so far was a dude so things were looking good.

Mile 13 came and I could see the finish line and looked down at my watch and I was close to going under 1:44. I ended up somehow stopping my watch early but it says at mile 13 I was at 1:43, when I crossed the finish line the clock said 1:45:23. However, the results online say 1:46:02 and if you look in the Chronicle it says 1:47:05. So not sure really what to believe my time was. Let’s go with 1:45:23

Hello Finishers Medal

When I crossed the finish line I was still in a daze and trying to get my bib off so I was a little confused when they handed me a trophy. Oh cool, age groupers get trophies. Nope. I placed OVERALL!

Hello 2nd Place Overall Finisher

Sure the competition was not the greatest and I did not PR but I still placed overall and am happy with that. Also, 2 is my favorite number! Will I be back next year? YEP! Maybe by then I will learn how to take a picture of medal without having the flash glaring on it.

If you are looking for a small, cheap half marathon to fun next fall then this is the course. If you are looking for a PR this is probably the course for you. I am calling it here this will be my PR course next year 🙂

  1. Um hello awesome! (Not the mix-up on times obviously) How did you not know you were in second overall?!?!? That is just so awesome, well done on the super revenge!!!!

  2. You’re such a bad ass. It breaks my little heart that I was in OH for this (obvs in no condition to run) but that’s awesome you had such a great race. NCN did the Columbia Station half and yes, it is a cheap, no-frills bag but I like it that way.

  3. Way to go!
I am going to keep this race in mind for next year. I dislike mixed official results though! I’ve had that happen and it’s confusing knowing what to call your official time as.
P.S. Just turn off the flash 🙂

  4. I love going to races to cheer everyone on…. I can’t imagine running without having a cheering section, so even when I don’t know people, I go and cheer if it’s local. Nice job on the placing! (a win is a win regardless 🙂 )

  5. Great job! Never heard of this race. However, I do LOVE the medal 🙂 I am a medal whore… my wife, a T-Shirt whore… I don’t run for the glory, just the bling 😉

Great job. I would paint your name on the towpath… but seeing that its all cinders, it might not be there when you come through haha.

    Keep up the good work!
